Anuvahood has been building up hype in all the right places. The target demographic is clearly tech savvy teenagers thirsty for British entertainment and active across social networks including Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

The promotional strategy has embraced social media as a prominent element of communication and exploits the strenghts of each platform.

Starting with YouTube Anuvahood uses annotation links to create a DVD style menu taking the viewer from a traditional trailer to a content hub featuring the all important trailer, comic book animations, a photo slideshow and much more. The experience puts trailers from Hollywood blockbusters to shame.

On Facebook Anuvahood uses a range of techniques to capture your imagination starting with a ‘fangated’ Facebook page, a strong call-to-action to ‘like’ the page and access the trailer and finally, clever profile picture customisation seamlessly integrated into the default trailer ‘app’. The list doesn’t stop there either, fans have an exclusive video clip, competitions, a range of photo albums and so much more the list would be too long.

Facebook is a key platform to share video content and create a genuine buzz about everything from brands, to charitable causes. The real achievements from the Anuvahood page come from the genuine out-of-the-box platform strategy consisting of parallel pages for key phrases of the film (seen in the trailer) such as “Fruitella – It’s a badman sweet, you get me” – see page and “Why are you dressed like a Strawberry Ice Cream?” – see page. A funny take on an old format “Fan of the week” has been developed with urban slang as “Fam of the week”, or family member of the week and featured in the bottom part of the profile picture, a space that is usually wasted but highly visible to visitors.

An obligatory call-to-share for the page is incentivised by a counter mechanic (remember Blue Peter fundraisers?) where topical prizes are “released” including Fruittella, t-shits, tickets to screenings and Sony PSPs. The mechanic is clear and rewards participation during the crucial fan recruitment stage.

On Twitter Anuvahood embraces a fundamental function of the platform to communicate with followers. By retweeting (reposting) selected messages publicly updated by fans, the profile becomes a curator, spreading important messages such as the release of mobile apps, slogans from the film and a countdown for the theatrical release – followers are exposed to the same messages usually heard from branded accounts through the voice of fans. This approach creates a sense of trust and showcases genuine interest from fans. This technique allows the messages to be distributed and spread virally without the need of traditional push techniques such as promoted Trends, Profiles and Tweets.

This approach compliments the campaign with an excellent understanding of the platform and builds an element of trust that is necessary for viral / social campaigns. Further traditional conversation strategy is used to recruit users to competitions and content on Facebook driving traffic and demonstrating once again that Facebook is the true hub for fans.

The resulting social media strategy works well with search engines and generates excellent organic SEO with hits that couldn’t be better optimised. Top hits include the official website, IMDb and Wikipedia. Real time news results include a perfect demographic match including content from urban magazine RWD Online and SoulCulture as well as numerous well known international publications.

As you progress further through 1st page search results YouTube videos, Twitter and Facebook profiles are the next most prominent items giving users clear direction of where to interact with the campaign.

Completing the 1st page, the final results provide information about mobile apps from Yahoo and an interview with the director of the film and main actor by the BBC.

In summary Anuvahood’s social media effort is a model example of how to reach and engage a teenage audience. The demographic want advertising to be relevant and take place where they spend their time.

Anuvahood might not break box office records but the intelligent use of social media is worth taking a moment to appreciate.
